Paraw bibi

Paraw Bibi is a revered shrine located near the village of Paraw in the Serdar district of Turkmenistan’s Balkan province, nestled in the Kopetdag mountain range.  The shrine is dedicated to Paraw Bibi, a legendary figure believed to have lived during the 11th or 12th century.  According to local legends, Paraw Bibi was a virtuous and courageous woman who sought refuge in the mountains to protect her purity and faith.  In a moment of divine intervention, the mountain is said to have split open to allow her sanctuary, and she vanished, leaving behind only her handprints and footprints in the stone.

The mausoleum, constructed around the 11th century, is situated on a steep hillside southwest of the Paraw settlement.  Visitors must ascend 269 steps to reach the site.  The main facade of the building stands at 4.8 meters in height.  Inside, the floor is covered with sacrificial felts, and a small cave in one corner is believed to be the place where Paraw Bibi Entered the mountainside.

Throughout the centuries, the Paraw Bibi shrine has been a significant pilgrimage destination, especially for women seeking blessings related to fertility, protection, and spiritual guidance.  Visitors often tie ribbons or cloths near the shrine, symbolizing their prayers and hopes.  The belief in Paraw Bibi’s spiritual power remains strong, with many attributing answered prayers and miracles to her intercession.
